“Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”(2 Corinthians 6:17-18)
“Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”(2 Corinthians 7:1)
God is a holy God! Holiness is there core, the essence of his being, his nature. In him no evil, no darkness exist or stands. And He has called his SONS and DAUGHTERS, those who have received his son: “who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, BUT OF GOD.”(John 1:13), to be like his son who is the FIRST BORN among many brothers (Rom 8:29), to be SANCTIFIED and HOLY, to be separate!
Jesus prayed for us and said “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. SANCTIFY THEM BY THE TRUTH; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. FOR THEM I SANCTIFY MYSELF, THAT THEY TOO MAY BE TRULY SANCTIFIED.”- That is our identity, to be a sanctified (set apart for holy use) people unto the father.
We are a KINGDOM OF PRIESTS in Christ Jesus; that was the father’s intention, to PURCHASE/REDEEM for HIMSELF a Kingdom of priests. Jesus death and blood made that possible. “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen” (Rev 1:5-6)
Jesus did this and took those who once WERE NOT a people (1 Pet 2:10) and make them a holy, chosen people for God. “But you are a CHOSEN RACE/PEOPLE, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a HOLY NATION, a PEOPLE FOR HIS OWN POSSESSION, that you may proclaim the Excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”(1 Peter 2:9)
We, who are in Christ, are NOW children of light. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all”(1 John 1:5), no shadow, he is surrounded by unapproachable light in his glory, his kingdom is one of light, pure light. He has no fellowship with darkness. The deeds of darkness are Satan’s; he’s the King of darkness. He loves shadows; he does his deeds in darkness. His kingdom hates light, for light exposes its evil deeds. Before Christ, we were darkness, children of darkness. But once we received Christ we became new creations in a new kingdom, one of LIGHT and PURITY!
He has literally CALLED US, DELIVERED US OUT of darkness and made we who were ONCE darkness, LIGHT in his son. Glory to God!
“For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13)
He has DELIVERED us OUT of the kingdom of darkness into that of his son; his son is the LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Jesus said” “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the LIGHT OF LIFE. “
We are no longer to partake in the deeds/works of darkness but be light even as he is light! He says “”Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them”. We must be separate. And he asks “what fellowship has light with darkness?”(2 Cor 6:14). Again “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them” (Eph 5:11).
What are these unfruitful works of darkness? The works of the flesh, the passions and desires of the flesh, anything contrary to the spirit of God, any compromise, any lukewarmness in any matter. We are to be light, we cannot straddle the fence, we cannot mix light with darkness, and we cannot be lukewarm. We must be separate from the world (darkness).
That’s why it can never be lip service; it must come from the heart and reflect in our ways. That’s why it says “let us cleanse ourselves from EVERY DEFILEMENT of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1). The fear of God, of he who is light and hates darkness, will bring holiness to completion in us as we cleanse OURSELVES from every defilement. It says every defilement. It’s not enough to cleanse some defilement and tolerate others, but we must cleanse ourselves from ALL defilement and impurity.
“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”(1 John 1:6)
